When paralleling equipment such as generators, or other distributed generation sources, to each other or the utility supply, it is imperative that voltages produced by the generating equipment are as closely matched as possible.  This means not only the RMS voltage values but the actual voltage waveshapes as well. Voltage waveshape differences result in instantaneous voltages being present between the paralleled sources which can lead to heavy circulating current in the common neutral conductors in 4-wire applications or in the grounds in grounded 3-wire applications...

Circulating Current Analysis
Mirus has the capability of simulating the circulating currents created by paralleling dissimilar pitched generators or utility transformers. In order to simulate the system, Mirus only needs data sheets from the generators/utility transformer. This sample report shows an example of a project paralleling two existing 13/15 pitch generators with a new 2/3 pitch generator. Page 4 of the report shows that with the Genlink DPNL installed, circulating currents are reduce by 15.1X. Pages 5 and 6 show the effect on the short circuit current rating and confirms that the system is still effectively grounded.
