Production gremlins
‘Production gremlins’ is a funny sounding term used in the film industry to refer to what can be serious production problems. Guy Holt, Director of Lighting & Grip Rental from New England Studios, a state of the art film studio north of Boston, first started to realize there was an unexplained problem on a night-time location shoot about 15 years ago. The project: a historical documentary that required a full lighting setup. On this shoot, every time he and his team attempted to operate all of the lighting equipment, some lights would inexplicably turn off. At most, they could only get 50% of the lights to work at a time.

The MIRUS solution for harmonics mitigation in the film industry
Fortunately, Guy heard about a novel approach taken by E! Entertainment. To mitigate harmonic problems encountered in their TV studios, E! Entertainment installed special harmonic mitigating transformers by MIRUS. Based on what he read about E! Entertainment’s results, Guy contacted Tony Hoevenaars, President of MIRUS International. Working together, they were able to develop a portable transformer that mitigates lighting equipment harmonics. Being portable, these transformers are now also rented for location shoots. MIRUS eliminated these production gremlins through its harmonics expertise.

Failure to connect to the grid
In 2013, Sean Hammond, VP of Operations at Barrie, Ontario-based EthoSolar found himself in a bit of a tight spot when a 500 kW solar installation in Southern Ontario was not allowed by the utility to connect to the grid. The non-MIRUS supplied transformer was deemed insufficient because of the utility’s interpretation of Hydro One Network Inc.’s Transformer Interconnection Requirements (HONI TIR). Without the ability to connect to the grid, the project remained incomplete, putting a strain on EthoSolar’s construction financing.

Fortunately for Sean, MIRUS International began working in this sector. After some initial discussion, it became apparent that the only solution to save the existing transformer was to install a zigzag autotransformer and neutral grounding inductor (NGI) designed to meet the HONI TIR requirements. The team at MIRUS came to the rescue with a very quick turn-around, shipping these devices to site two weeks later.

What were the benefits of MIRUS’ solution?
The zigzag autotransformer (an adaptation of MIRUS’ NCE™) and NGI were added to the existing transformer to address the utility’s requirement for effective grounding during islanded operation, without introducing a low impedance path for circulating common-mode currents. Another option was to replace the existing transformer with one from MIRUS’ new line of ULLTRA™ Solar Transformers that have the HONI TIR requirements built-in.

Harmonic mitigation solutions for VSDs in data centers

With their ability to significantly reduce induction motor power consumption, Variable Speed Drives (VSDs) have recently been finding many more applications in data centers. These include chillers, chilled water pumps, cooling tower fans and computer room air conditioners (CRACs). Although they are very effective in reducing energy, they can introduce a serious power quality issue, known as harmonic distortion, if treatment is not considered.

At a new data center for a Canadian financial institution located in Barrie, Ontario, Canada, two methods of treatment—passive harmonic filters and a built-in parallel active filter—were employed on the cooling systems to reduce harmonics. In July 2012, MIRUS International was brought in by ADM Engineering to conduct field testing at this data center. The goal was to provide a power quality analysis of the center’s newly designed power distribution, including VSD systems with MIRUS Lineator Advanced Universal Harmonic Filters (AUHF) and a chiller equipped with a built-in parallel active harmonic filter.
