Mirus engineers complete solution to resolve inverter driven motor issues
BRAMPTON, ON – April 5, 2013 – The launch of Mirus International’s Inversine advanced universal sinewave filter (AUSF) marks a substantial step forward in harmonic mitigation technology. The Inversine AUSF provides motor protection against the degrading effects of reflected wave phenomenon that cause motor winding failure, cable insulation degradation and high electromagnetic interference (EMI/RFI).
The Inversine AUSF is engineered to transform the chopped up PWM VFD output voltage into a clean sinewave that has <3% THD(V).The AUSF is designed to work seamlessly with all makes of PWM VFD’S on applications such as:
- Motor drives with up to 15,000 feet of motor lead lengths
- Electrical Submersible Pumps (ESP’s)with long motor cables
- Existing motor with insufficient motor or cable insulation
- Motor drives with multiple parallel motors
- Motor drives requiring lower peak voltage level and dV/dt rise time ratio
- HVAC systems requiring reduced audible motor noise
- Motor drive applications requiring maximum safety and reliability
“The Inversine AUSF was developed with the end-user in mind to address dV/dt overvoltage issues which can cause motor and motor cable insulation breakdown and to eliminate heating in the motor caused by the highly distorted PWM voltage waveform. In addition, Mirus is developing a common-mode choke option for the Inversine to block motor bearing currents that can lead to bearing fluting. With the launch of our Inversine AUSF, Mirus International continues its dedication to engineering world class power quality improvement products for mission critical operations,” said Tony Hoevenaars, President and CEO.
In addition to providing all of the above great features the AUSF also corrects the motor Power Factor to almost unity and introduces the lowest losses of any sinewave filter since the design does not require damping resistors. Stricter IEEE 519 Harmonic Limits for Hospitals met by Lineator Harmonic Filter
Brampton, ON – May 30, 2012 – Harmonic distortion influences a variety of mission critical applications from municipal waste water pumps to offshore drilling rigs and ship propulsion systems, and includes highly demanding hospital and airport applications. A distorted system voltage in a hospital or airport affects the reliable operation of sensitive equipment and in the event of any interruption, even extremely short, may lead to loss of life. Due to the critical nature of this issue, the IEEE Std 519 1992 specifies < 3% Total Harmonic Voltage Distortion (THD (V)) for hospitals and airports compared to other applications where THD (V) of <5% is acceptable. Therefore, the harmonic mitigation solution chosen by hospitals and airports is a consequential decision requiring extreme reliability while adhering to the strictest of regulatory requirements.
“As the world’s foremost authority on harmonics mitigation, Mirus International has been at the forefront of developing world-class power quality improvement products for a myriad of applications, often called to solve some of the most challenging harmonic problems. Mirus has continuously proven that its solution – Lineator™ Passive Harmonic Filter – is effective in reducing Variable Frequency Drive (VFD) harmonics by up to 10 times with none of the inherent problems of conventional filters.
One such example includes a hospital in Haifa, Israel - Rambam Health Care Hospital and Campus – a 1,000-bed academic hospital serving more than two million people in northern Israel. In an effort to save energy the hospital purchased two new Chillers at 240kW each for their cooling system. The new Chillers were equipped with VFD’s which consumed far less energy per cooling ton but drew current from the electrical supply in nonlinear pulses causing the hospital’s supply voltage to become increasingly distorted. Since the distorted system voltage could ultimately affect the reliable operation of sensitive equipment in the hospital, it required an effective and immediate resolution. The solution? After much review the hospital selected the Lineator Passive Harmonic Filter which enabled the simultaneous operation of the two Chillers by reducing the current harmonic pollution by more than 2/3 and lowering voltage distortion from almost 4% to < 1.5%, well below the IEEE 519-1992 requirements. In addition, the operating temperature of the drives and Chillers was reduced by more than 10°C, increasing their life expectancy and reliability. Read more on this application; please download the case study at http://www.mirusinternational.com/downloads/Case-Study-Rambam-Hospital-Israel.pdf
“Mirus’ Lineator™ filter has been engineered and manufactured to treat even the most challenging of harmonic applications. For Rambam Hospital the no-setup approach, requiring just fitting the filter to the drive rating and motor type, provided the best solution for reduced harmonics in this retrofit system and ensured that harmonic pollution limits were met.” says Al Archambault, Director of Sales, Mirus International.

Mirus’ SOLV™ Saved SkyVenture Montreal Time and Money on their Harmonic Solution
Brampton, ON – December 1, 2011 – The Owners of SkyVenture, an indoor free-fall simulator, were building a new dedicated facility for its first Canadian location in Montreal. The SkyVenture simulator is a large-scale wind-tunnel that requires the use of four (4) 350HP Adjustable Speed Drives (ASDs) to run blowers that generate a powerful 175km per hour airstream. As part of the new building approval process, the Consulting Engineer had to submit a Load Profile to Hydro Quebec; in this case an analysis showing that the harmonics generated by the VFDs would be properly treated. Mirus International Inc., the world’s foremost authority on harmonics mitigation, was called upon by the Consulting Engineer working on the SkyVenture building to provide an analysis tool and harmonic solution to meet the IEEE Standard 519 recommendations for harmonic distortion limits.
“SkyVenture Montreal had a need for power quality analysis software, particularly, the ability to accurately calculate and determine power system harmonic distortion when using Adjustable Speed Drives, and SOLV™ was able to fill that gap. With built-in IEEE Std 519 harmonic limits this is a valuable tool for any consulting engineer or power quality professional,” says Tony Hoevenaars, President and CEO, Mirus International, “The superior harmonics analysis tool provides users with additional tools that will improve their ability to calculate current and voltage distortion for their unique applications.”
The SkyVenture challenge: Using SOLV™, Mirus’ exclusive harmonics analysis software, the Consulting Engineer ran a simulation by inputting information on the VFDs and the harmonic solution they were intending to use – the drive manufacturers’ basic treatment of harmonics – a 3% line reactor. The result of the simulation: voltage distortion at the Point of Common Coupling (PCC) was 8.2%, well above IEEE Standard 519 harmonic limits, and current distortion exceeded the Utility requirements.
The SkyVenture solution: The Consulting Engineer ran a new simulation using Mirus’ SOLV™, this time with two (2) 700HP Lineators™ as the harmonic solution – each Lineator powering two (2) 350HP VFDs. Using the Lineators, harmonic distortion decreased dramatically and met IEEE Standard 519 limits, in addition, offered greater efficiency resulting in a shorter payback period. Hydro Quebec responded quickly to the analysis provided with an approval to proceed and complete the hook-up of the building.
SOLV™ provided the proof – SkyVenture was able to accurately and quickly perform simulations that calculated current and voltage distortion levels – saving them time and money. Download your free copy of SOLV, Mirus’ proprietary and complimentary harmonics analysis software.
“Before SOLV™, awareness of Harmonic issues would often come when it was too late: when improperly treated harmonic distortion was effecting operations. Now with SOLV™, we can simulate scenarios at the design and planning stage using actual site data for existing facilities, or by using known design parameters in new construction.” says Tony Ballard, Director of Business Development, Power-Quality Concepts Inc.

IEEE Award Winning Paper co-authored by Mirus International
Brampton, ON – September 20, 2011 – Mirus International’s President and CEO, Tony Hoevenaars, has been honoured for his contribution to the IEEE Paper, Design Considerations When Applying Various ASD Topologies to Meet Harmonic Compliance along with three co-authors. The paper was selected as the 3rd Place Prize Paper from the 2010 IEEE IAS Petroleum and Chemical Industry Technical Conference in San Antonio. The highly regarded award is in recognition of the authors’ dedication and contribution to the electrical engineering profession.
“It is an honour to be recognized by the IEEE community and to be a part of the collaborative team that was responsible for developing the paper,” says Tony Hoevenaars. “As a long-standing member and contributor to IEEE, conducting research and publishing papers demonstrates mine and the company’s commitment to ensure the IEEE community shares its collective knowledge for the benefit of the membership and the industries we serve.”
The goal of the Award-winning paper was to solve the challenge many electrical engineers have when attempting to limit the harmonic distortion produced by Adjustable Speed Drives (ASDs). Manufacturers have introduced several methods of both passive and active harmonic mitigation and users of ASDs who are faced with the various options often find it difficult to select the most appropriate one for their particular application.
To solve this challenge, Tony and the team used computer simulation and laboratory measurements and as highlighted in the paper, they analyzed the most common passive solutions for low voltage (LV) applications which include ac line reactors or dc link chokes, phase shifting to produce multi-pulse ASDs and inline passive harmonic filters.
The computer simulation program used in this research was Mirus International’s own SOLV™, the company’s proprietary and complimentary harmonics analysis software. SOLV is a powerful simulation program that will calculate current and voltage distortion levels by simulating the Mirus Lineator™ and Adjustable Speed Drive (ASDs) based on your load requirements. By simply entering some basic information about your source and ASD system, Mirus’ SOLV will help you find the right solution for your application. Download your free copy of SOLV today.

Prevent Generator Neutral Circulating Current with Mirus International’s GENLINK™ DPNL
Brampton, ON – August 11, 2011 – Mirus International, a designer and developer of world class power quality improvement products is pleased to introduce GENLINK™ DPNL (Dissimilar Pitch Neutral Limiter). Mirus’ GENLINK™ DPNL is a multiple winding reactor which is installed in the common neutral of paralleled sources.
“When paralleling equipment such as generators or other distributed generation sources to each other or the utility supply, it’s critical that voltages produced by this equipment match as closely as possible,” says Tony Hoevenaars, President, Mirus International. “To properly match voltages the RMS values need to be similar as well as the instantaneous values which are determined by the voltage waveshapes. If not properly matched, circulating neutral currents can result.”
When paralleling generators with different pitch configurations, instantaneous voltages often do not match because the voltage waveshapes are somewhat different. This can also be true when alternative energy sources (such as solar or wind) are paralleled with the Utility. In these circumstances, neutral circulating currents will appear which are predominantly triple frequency. If left untreated, these currents can cause equipment to overheat and false tripping of overcurrent protection equipment.
Mirus’ GENLINK™ DPNL, once installed in the common neutral between dissimilar generators or the generator and Utility supply, will add impedance to block the flow of circulating currents with minimal impedance to the flow of fault current.
“The GENLINK™ DPNL is just one of many power quality improvement products developed by Mirus,” adds Hoevenaars. “Engineered and manufactured to treat challenging harmonic applications, our products provide solutions to companies who can’t afford downtime, risk equipment failure or distortion of any kind on the electrical distribution system,” says Hoevenaars.

Lineator Harmonic Filter with 6-pulse VFD Outperforms 18-pulse VFD in reducing Harmonics
Brampton, ON – April 21, 2011 – The use of Variable Speed Drives (VSDs) is increasing in many industries resulting in an increased need to treat the current harmonics generated by these nonlinear loads. Two common methods of harmonic treatment include using a 6-pulse VFD with harmonic filter and an 18-pulse VFD. In comparing these methods, Mirus International, finds that using a 6-pulse VFD with its passive harmonic filter, Lineator™, is a better performing solution.
As the world’s foremost authority on harmonics mitigation, Mirus International has been at the forefront of developing world-class power quality improvement products for a myriad of applications, often called to solve some of the most challenging harmonic problems. From municipal waste water pumps to offshore drilling rigs and ship propulsion systems, Mirus has continuously proven that its solution – 6-pulse VFD with Lineator™ filter – is more effective and efficient than an 18-pulse drive.
One such example includes a skydiving simulator company that was considering using 18-pulse drives for its large blowers. Using Mirus’ proprietary and complimentary harmonic analysis software, SOLV™, the company found that 6-pulse VFDs with Lineator™ filters was the best and most cost effective choice. The findings? A 6-pulse VFD with Lineator™ was up to 3% more efficient, took up to 25% less floor space, cost 25% less and provided better harmonic mitigation especially when background voltage distortion and phase voltage imbalance were taken into consideration. Field measurements taken during earlier comparison testing demonstrated that the Lineator™ can actually outperform the predicted levels. Losses were 3.5% to 6% lower than the 18-pulse drive, and current distortion levels were better than Mirus’ guaranteed values. To read more on this application, please download the case study at http://www.mirusinternational.com/downloads/Case-Study-SkyVenture-Montreal.pdf.
“Mirus’ Lineator™ filter has been engineered and manufactured to treat even the most challenging of harmonic applications. When coupled with a 6-pulse VFD it simply outperforms 18-pulse VFDs and on applications where companies can’t afford downtime, risk equipment failure or distortion of any kind on the electrical distribution system, there’s no better solution,” says Al Archambault, Director of Sales, Mirus International.

“The rapid growth of the Lineator AUHF and Onics HMRP product lines – necessitated the new 32,733 square-foot facility,” said Mirus President Tony Hoevenaars.
“We are very excited about our new facility in Brampton. We had outgrown our shop in Mississauga which made it increasingly challenging to manufacture our large horsepower range of Lineators for the offshore drilling market in a limited space,” Hoevenaars stated.
“After extensive search, we decided that a new, larger facility would best meet our current and future requirements,” Hoevenaars added. “Mirus International has outgrown its facility twice in last ten years, and we wanted a facility that could accommodate our continued growth and new products. The new facility is almost twice the size of the previous one and will allow us to continue to provide superior quality product at reduced delivery times for our customers. In addition to upgrading our facility, we have made substantial capital investments in tooling, equipment, and logistics to better serve our customer base, and provide a solid foundation for continued growth.”
